HTC has been rather quiet on the smartphone front but that doesn’t mean that the company has completely given up on smartphones. In fact, speaking to DigiTimes (paywall) at MWC 2022, the company revealed that they are developing a new smartphone, although this will be a smartphone with a twist.

According to HTC, they are planning to integrate metaverse features into the device. For those unfamiliar, the metaverse is basically a term used to describe augmented and virtual reality, like a virtual world within a real world sort of thing, one that Meta (formerly known as Facebook) kind of helped bring to the mainstream consciousness.

Not much is known about this handset for now except that it will have metaverse features. We’re not sure what that means exactly so it will be interesting to see what HTC can come up with. HTC is no stranger when it comes to virtual reality. The company had previously developed its Vive headset together with Valve, so they do have some experience there.

The company has also been known to take on interesting projects. For example, some of you might recall that several years ago, HTC launched the Exodus smartphone that featured blockchain technology, so for them to create a metaverse smartphone seems about right. There’s no word on when this handset is expected to launch, so we’ll just have to wait and see.
