Man Arrested After Using AirTag To Track His Victim’s Car

AirTag Alert Helped Prevent A Truck From Potentially Being Stolen

We have been hearing a worrying number of stories and instances in which Apple’s AirTag tracking accessory has been abused to commit a crime. It looks like we have another to add to that list, but this one ends on a slightly happier note as the person who was abusing the AirTag was arrested.

Typically in the previous stories we’ve heard, it was unclear what happened after, so at least this has a conclusion. According to the police, they arrested a man from Waterbury after he had allegedly used an AirTag to track his victim’s car.

The police were initially dispatched on Sunday for a “reported domestic dispute”, and later an investigator discovered that the man had placed a tracking device inside of the victim’s vehicle. The man has since been charged with first-degree stalking and violation of a protective order.

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard of an AirTag being used for stalking and other criminal purposes. While Apple has built-in some anti-stalking features into the AirTag, the fact that they are still being used for such purposes suggests that it could stand to be improved upon greatly, so hopefully that’s something that Apple is working on for future models or firmware updates.
